In my experience, the Chilipad has exceeded all expectations.I have the more recent version of the product that goes down to 46F (although I rarely need to go below about 60F).I live in the deep south and the costs for air conditioning my house can be substantial.In order to maintain some degree of comfort for sleeping at night, heavy AC usage was typically required.I bought the Chilipad hoping that I could put the thermostat up at least three degrees.I calculated that this would lead to a payback, in my case, of approximately two summers.The setup of the system is simple.The package contents include the mattress topper and umbilical and, separately packaged, one or two cooling units depending on which model you bought, in addition to a remote control.You simply place the topper over your existing mattress (or over a waterproof barrier if you're worried about leakage or condensation) and you then hook the umbilical to the cooling unit.The cooling unit itself is about the size of a large shoebox and is meant to be placed out of the way.If your bed is high enough it can go under it, otherwise you may need to put it behind the headboard or equivalent.After connecting the umbilical, you fill the cooling unit with the water which it will circulate through the topper.The volume of water required is actually quite small, somewhere around the volume of a bottle of water that you might get from a vending machine.Once you have all that in place you simply plug it in and you're set.
The unit operation is fairly straight forward.You set a desired water temp using either the buttons on the cooling unit or supplied remote control.The unit will cycle on and off automatically to maintain the set temperature.When the unit is in the cooling mode it produces a gentle whirring, similar to a computer fan.If you're used to sleeping with dead silence it will take some getting used to.Given that it is soft, "white" noise though, I find it to be mostly a non issue.The cooling unit's performance has been effective for me.I've been able to significantly reduce my house AC usage while correspondingly lowering the temp on the Chilipad.In fact the Chilipad can make the bed downright cold if I am too aggressive with the temp setpoint.
My main complaints are fairly minimal.First, the lights on the Chilipad are unacceptably bright.I don't know how in the world this made it into their final design.A dark room is completely lit by the LEDs on the front of the control unit.Fortunately this is an easy problem to work around.I have found that placing a bit of tape or a small folded cloth (don't obstruct the fans!) over the LEDs eliminates the problem.My other complaint is that the remote is clunky and when you change the temp setpoint with it, the display on the control unit itself doesn't reflect the change.This makes it tricky to tell what temp the unit thinks it should be controlling to.
Overall I think this product is great and it does everything as advertised.I would highly recommend it, even given the price.If you use central AC it should pay for itself and if you don't it still should make for a much more comfortable and restful nights sleep.
