Having recently spent two months sleeping on a memory-foam mattress (tempur-pedic) and finding it comfortable and healthful but too sweat-inducing, I researched my options as I was moving and needed a new bed. My life's experience with coil-spring mattresses is that the very expensive ones would be comfy but there always seem to be compromises of one form or another. I found the memory foam to be the best I've experienced in terms of a restful night's sleep. I found however that I often awoke feeling the damp of having perspired and I'd read this is an issue associated with the conventional memory foam mattresses. I'd also read that latex was a solution to this and that the all-natural latex mattresses were best in terms of durability, evironmentally friendliness and minimal, not unhealthy off-gassing. I became aware of the different latex production methods and found this Paramount Bedding Sawgrass to be of an ideal construction: 6" of Dunlop-process for firm support topped with 3" of softer talalay-process latex for plush comfort. I installed this mattress on a captain's bed with a slatted platform. It's HEAVY! - basically a big slab of dense rubber. But after only two nights I'm sold. It is the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. Its got a ten year warranty and never needs flipping. I plan to report later on the off-gassing issue since this definitely has contributed a distinct fragrance to my home but it supposedly subsides within within a week or so. I would describe it as rubber without the familiar petroleum harshness of say tires or something like that. Its not overwhelming or reaction-inducing, it just needs to go away within a reasonable time. If this is the only drawback and it goes away, I can't find any fault with this mattress. Will update....By the way, I received this 9 days from date of order and I understand the manufacturer makes these as they're ordered in Oregon (I'm in NY). Free, white glove delivery was perfect. Very, very happy with this purchase!
04/25/2010: Four day update - Just wanted to note that any trace of an off-gassing odor has subsided completely and was not something I thought a problem at all. You could tell you had a new slab of rubber for a day or two but, by last night, when I returned home after nine hours out of the house, I didn't notice anything at all. I'll report down the road with long-term observations.
