First, the item is not "merlot".There is not a bit of red in the finish.Just glancing at it, you would assume that it is black.
"Birch veneer and solid wood"
This should read "Imitation wood paper on top of particle-board.When real wood is scratched or dented, it gives a piece of furniture it's character.When this chinese-made garbage gets damaged, it's landfill.
It is a shame that this is well-designed but not well-made.I would gladly pay the extra cost for decent materials.Don't imagine that this is something you will pass down to your grand-kids one day.But then again, if you're like most people, you probably don't really care.
