I initially set both sides and all zones to 4.
While this felt nice and toasty when first slipping into bed, a few hours later I was being burnt on the legs.
I changed the settings to 2.
This helped somewhat, but it was necessary to turn the neck and shoulders zone
and the lumbar (middle) zone to 1 to avoid sweating.
My wife, who normally pulls the covers up to her neck,
had thrown them back when we woke up in the morning.
I had adjust her side to 3, even though she had not complained,
as I was concerned she would also get burnt.
She turned her side to 2 sometime later, before I woke up.
It seems that you get very little ability to adjust this product within a range of comfortable heat settings.
I can only imagine the damage that could be done by setting this product on High.
On the plus side, it is very nice to be able to move around in the bed, and feel heat wherever you go.
The hookup was fairly straightforward. The base unit has 3 cords coming out of it.
The first is the power cord, which is a rather short 5 feet.
The other two are very long flat four-conductor cords that plug into the mattress pad in either corner at the base of the mattress, such that the connectors lay flat on the corners of the mattress.
These flat cords are longer than the distance from the top to the bottom of the mattress, plus a few extra feet.
The small plastic battery door on the remote is a rather loose fit, and you could possibly lose it if you are not careful.
I am not inclined to believe you could order a replacement without buying an entire remote, which (based on the instructions in the book) would require returning the entire product.Perhaps it will have to be taped to prevent loss.
The remote is pleasant to look at and fairly easy to use.
When you first turn on one side of the pad or the other,
all 3 zones (Head & Shoulders - Lumbar - Legs & Feet) are adjustable simultaneously.
Or you can press the button associated with a particular zone,
and adjust it independently. If you wish to adjust all 3 zones together again,
simply turn off that side and turn it on again. No settings are lost.
There is a pre-heat mode that heats the selected side on High for 30 minutes.
Another review online claims that this is not true
and that this only heats the mattress pad to the settings you already have in place.
If any zone is set to off, then it will not pre-heat.
There is an auto-off feature that turns off the heat after 10 hours.
This can be easily disabled with one push of a button on the remote.
For some odd reason Sunbeam is unable to provide an electronic (PDF) version of the manuals for this product, even though many others are shown on their web-site.
To sum up, there are advantages to this product as compared to a standard heating pad,
but a larger degree of product testing needed to take place before this product came to market.
